BLUE LULLABY

This ‘gentle bluesy’ work from George Gershwin’s set of three piano preludes has been artfully arranged for handbells by Douglas Anderson. Influenced by jazz – Gershwin was one of the premiere early 20th century classical composers and this Prelude No. 2 perfectly represents the music emerging during this era. The steady foundation and somewhat repetitive chromatic chords beautifully support the melody, which is primarily featured in the handchimes. Coupling bells and handchimes in octaves in one section creates engaging textures. Steady, gentle stopped sounds then support the bass melody, featured in the handchimes. This should be gently rung throughout and groups might consider executing a ‘delay damp’ in the supporting chords for a smoother sound.
