Troika ~ from Lt. Kiji Suite

Lieutenant Kiji Suite describes main events in Kiji’s life and is one of the favorite works by Sergei Prokofiev. The fourth movement – Troika  -  represents a fast winter’s journey in a troika – a Russian three-horse sled – and features the melody based on an old Hussar song accompanied by rapid pizzicato notes and sleigh bells. Malleting bells on the padded table in both treble and bass play the ‘pizzicato’ part while rung notes in octaves carry the melody.  Slower, dramatic sections introduce and end this work with the delightfully energetic ‘sleigh ride’ racing along between. Optional: if low bass bells are available, the melody may be rung down 8va.  This is a delightful setting that groups will enjoy playing – for winter concerts or anytime!
